Dear Albany Community,
We will be hosting a local memorial service for Superintendent Dr. Frank Wells on May 10 from 4:00–7:00pm in the Albany Middle School gymnasium. This local memorial is specifically for members of the Albany Unified community—staff, students, and families—that were touched by Dr. Wells in his professional capacity as our Superintendent. We welcome you and your family to come and spend a moment reflecting on Dr. Wells’ service to all of us in this school district.
Secondary band and choir students will perform, and student artwork and projects from all grade levels will be on display at this service. There will be remembrance books where you can write down anecdotes of your own experiences with Dr. Wells, a place to drop off cards for his family, and some open microphone time if you would like to speak. This is in addition to the Wells Family Memorial, and is not a formal service, but a time to come together and mourn the unexpected loss of a man who touched so many of our lives.
The Wells Family will be honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Wells on Friday, April 19 at 10am at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Oakland with interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Flowers and cards can be sent to the church, at 1203 Willow Street, Oakland, CA 94607.
Cornell Playground Ribbon Cutting
Cornell Elementary’s new play structure opened a few days before Spring Break, just as soon as we received the final approvals. It was too short notice to have an official opening then, and so the ribbon-cutting ceremony happened this Wednesday morning. Cornell parents, staff, and, of course, students came together to joyously celebrate this new addition to their school. See Principal Floresca cut the red ribbon in the photo above!
April Is Arab American Heritage Month
At the March 26 meeting, the Board of Education passed this Resolution Proclaiming April as Arab American Heritage Month. Please take a moment to read it. Arab Americans continue to be underrepresented and undercounted in areas of health, education, employment, and housing. All schools in the District will be commemorating Arab Americans this month.
Pam “Profe” Lim-McAlister All-Star Teacher of the Year Finalist
Beloved Albany High School Spanish teacher Pamela "Profe" Lim-McAlister is one of five finalists for the NBC Sports 2024 All-Star Teacher Award. The finalist with the most online votes between now and May 31, 2024 will receive $30,000 for their school. Please vote for "Profe" online —you can vote daily! See a short video about Profe here.

Querida comunidad de Albany,
Organizaremos un servicio conmemorativo local para el Superintendente Dr. Frank Wells el 10 de mayo de 4:00 a 7:00 p. m. en el gimnasio de la escuela secundaria Albany. Este monumento local es específicamente para los miembros de la comunidad del Distrito Unificado de Albany: personal, estudiantes y familias, que fueron tocados por el Dr. Wells en su capacidad profesional como nuestro Superintendente. Le invitamos a usted y a su familia a venir y pasar un momento reflexionando sobre el servicio que el Dr. Wells brinda a todos nosotros en este distrito escolar.

La nueva estructura de juego de la Primaria Cornell abrió unos días antes de las vacaciones de primavera, tan pronto como recibimos las aprobaciones finales. En la reunión del 26 de marzo, la Junta de Educación aprobó esta Resolución que proclama abril como el Mes de la Herencia Árabe Estadounidense . Por favor tómate un momento para leerlo. Los árabes estadounidenses siguen estando subrepresentados y subcontados en áreas de salud, educación, empleo y vivienda. 5 月 10 日午後 4 時から午後 7 時まで、アルバニー中学校体育館でフランク ウェルズ学区長の追悼式を地元で開催します。この地元追悼式は、特にアルバニー統合学区のコミュニティのメンバー、つまり学区長としてのウェルズ博士の職務に感銘を受けたスタッフ、生徒、家族を対象としています。ご家族の皆様もぜひご来場いただき、この学区の私たち全員に対するウェルズ博士の貢献を思い起こすひとときをお過ごしください。
この式典では、中等部のバンドと合唱団の生徒が演奏し、全学年の生徒の作品やプロジェクトが展示されます。ウェルズ博士との体験談を書き留めることのできる追悼ノート、ウェルズ博士の家族に宛てたカードを置く場所、スピーチをしたい方のためのマイクの空き時間も用意されます。これはウェルズ家の追悼式典に加えて行われるもので、正式な式典ではありませんが、多くの人々の人生に影響を与えた人物の予期せぬ死を共に悼む時間です。
ウェルズ家は、4 月 19 日金曜日午前 10 時にオークランドのマウント ザイオン ミッショナリー バプテスト教会でウェルズ博士の生涯と功績を称え、その後マウンテン ビュー墓地に埋葬する予定です。花やカードは、1203 Willow Street, Oakland, CA 94607 にある教会までお送りください。
コーネル遊び場のリボンカット
コーネル小学校の新しい遊具は、最終承認を受けてすぐに、春休みの数日前にオープンしました。正式なオープンをするにはあまりにも急な通知だったため、今週水曜日の朝にリボンカット式が行われました。コーネルの保護者、スタッフ、そしてもちろん生徒たちが集まり、学校に新しく加わったこの施設を喜びをもって祝いました。上の写真で、フロレスキュー校長が赤いリボンを切る様子をご覧ください。
4月はアラブ系アメリカ人文化遺産月間です
3 月 26 日の会議で、教育委員会は4 月をアラブ系アメリカ人文化遺産月間と宣言する決議を可決しました。少し時間を取ってお読みください。アラブ系アメリカ人は、健康、教育、雇用、住宅の分野で依然として過小評価され、過小評価されています。学区内のすべての学校は今月、アラブ系アメリカ人を記念します。
