Dear Albany Community,
We have some remarkable singers among our students! In addition to the elementary students that I congratulated a few weeks ago, I discovered that more than a few of AUSD middle and high school students have been selected for honor choirs. Fourteen AMS and AHS students received invitations to join the premier California All State Honor Choir, eleven were invited to the American Choral Directors Association Western Honor Choir, and eighteen AHS students were asked to participate in the Coastal Regional Honor Choir. Please view this list of our wonderful singers! I want to sing their praises and congratulate every single one for this accomplishment.
Fall Sports Champions
The Albany High Girls' Tennis team dominated league play with an undefeated season! Coach PJ Mapumulo led this team to the championship for the second year in a row. The Girls’ Golf team was another AHS champion team this fall as they swung their way to a third consecutive TCAL championship! The Boys' Cross Country team also won their TCAL championship. Senior Lucas Cohen, who will be attending and running at Yale next fall, will be competing in the Nike Cross National Championships in Portland this weekend, which will be webcast live at 10:05am at nikecrossnationals.com. Congratulations to these fine student athletes!
Albany Reads Accountable
If you weren’t able to join my book club earlier this fall for the book Accountable by Dashka Slater, you can read it now as the 2023 Albany Reads book selection. The Albany Public Library will host discussion groups and an events series in collaboration with AUSD, including Dr. Raul Lopez, the author of The Soul of White Jokes and Devorah Heitner talking about growing up in a digital age. AUSD Executive Director of Student Services Deb Brill will present a student-moderated Restorative Justice Panel with some leading Bay Area restorative practitioners. Please be a part of these thought-provoking and unifying events.
The Hour of Code Is Coming!
Computer Science Education Week is December 4–10, in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper. The Hour of Code is an important part of this week as schools in over 180 countries promote computer science by introducing students to coding. To participate in the Hour of Code, watch this short, inspiring celebrity video, then go to this link and get started with your kids! There are engaging activities for all grade levels and ages.
Wait Until 8th
Although I am a strong supporter of computer science education, I also agree with our elementary and middle school principals that having students wait until at least the eighth grade before getting their own smartphones can have numerous benefits. By delaying, children may have more time for real-life social and emotional growth, solidifying healthy sleep habits, and participating in outdoor activities. This does not mean that I believe students should not have access to technology, as AUSD uses a variety of apps and websites to enhance our educational program at school. There is an important difference, however, between supervised access and the unsupervised access that students unavoidably gain by having their own devices. Consider Wait Until 8th. Together, our schools and families continue to strive to create a healthy digital environment for our students.
Parcel Tax Resolution
At Tuesday’s Special Meeting of the Board of Education, trustees passed Resolution 2023-24-07, which calls for a measure to be placed on the March 5, 2024 ballot. In brief, this measure would replace one of Albany’s existing parcel taxes with a tax based on the building’s square footage, which is generally considered to be fairer than a flat tax, which is the same for any size parcel. There is quite a bit more to say about this, but for now I will simply say that AUSD is woefully underfunded—even if this ballot measure passes next year, AUSD’s per pupil funding will still be far below the California average.

Resolución del impuesto predial
