Dear Albany Community,
On Tuesday, the Board approved Resolution #2023-2024-3: Recognizing October as Special Education Awareness Month. It was moving to see our families, teachers, and students read the resolution aloud. One of the student speakers is shown above. This Resolution recognizes that disability is part of human diversity and about 15% of AUSD students have been identified as having special needs. AUSD is committed to working towards equitable outcomes for students with disabilities and supports a vision of high expectations for all students and a commitment to learning goals, standards, interventions, and supports that are strong, clear, understood, and put into practice. October is a great time for classroom activities and for all of us throughout the district to increase Special Education Awareness.
Attendance—Every Day Matters!
A missed day of school is a lost opportunity for students to learn. Learning is sequential – each day builds on earlier concepts. Even though it might not seem like much, missing two days of school a month adds up to a month of lost learning by the end of the school year and increases the possibility that your student will not learn something they will need in order to understand more difficult material later. Here are some facts from the National Center for Education Statistics:
- Students who are absent more than 18 days of school are less proficient in reading, writing, and math compared to their peers with good attendance.
- Students who attend school regularly have been shown to achieve at higher levels than students who do not have regular attendance. This relationship between attendance and achievement may appear as early as first grade.
- Students who do not learn the fundamentals of reading, writing and math by third grade are more likely to fall behind and are less likely to graduate high school. (Attendance Works Brief)
That said, if your student is ill, they should stay home. For other circumstances that arise, please consider how quickly “now and then” absences add up and the inadvertent negative impact on learning they may cause. We want to see all students at school!
International Walk and Roll to School Day
All Albany schools will be celebrating International Walk and Roll to School Day next Wednesday, October 4. Not only does active transportation help our environment, it provides other benefits:
- Great way to get exercise into your student’s day
- Students arrive ready to settle down into the school day
- Provides a healthy transition to and from home life

- Oct. 3: AMS/AHS Fall Orchestra Concert with special guest the Berkeley High School Advanced Orchestra, 7pm, AHS Little Theater
- Oct. 4: International Walk and Roll to School Day, all schools
- Oct. 5: AHS Fall Band Concert, 7–8 pm, AHS Little Theater
- Oct. 9: Student Holiday (professional development day for staff)
- Oct. 17: AHS Choirs Fall Concert with special guest the AHS String Orchestra. This collaboration concert will feature Vivaldi selections, 7pm, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley

El martes, la Junta aprobó la Resolución #2023-2024-3: Reconocimiento de octubre como el Mes de Concientización sobre la Educación Especial . Fue conmovedor ver a nuestras familias, maestros y estudiantes leer la resolución en voz alta. Uno de los estudiantes oradores se muestra arriba. Esta Resolución reconoce que la discapacidad es parte de la diversidad humana y se ha identificado que alrededor del 15% de los estudiantes del AUSD tienen necesidades especiales. AUSD está comprometido a trabajar para lograr resultados equitativos para los estudiantes con discapacidades y apoya una visión de altas expectativas para todos los estudiantes y un compromiso con metas, estándares, intervenciones y apoyos de aprendizaje que sean sólidos, claros, comprendidos y puestos en práctica. Asistencia: ¡cada día importa!
Un día perdido de escuela es una oportunidad perdida para que los estudiantes aprendan. El aprendizaje es secuencial: cada día se basa en conceptos anteriores. Aunque no parezca mucho, faltar dos días de escuela al mes equivale a un mes de aprendizaje perdido al final del año escolar y aumenta la posibilidad de que su estudiante no aprenda algo que necesitará para comprender más. material difícil más adelante. Día Internacional de Caminar y Rodar a la Escuela
Todas las escuelas de Albany celebrarán el Día Internacional de Caminar y Rodar a la Escuela el próximo miércoles 4 de octubre. El transporte activo no solo ayuda a nuestro medio ambiente, sino que brinda otros beneficios:
- Excelente manera de incluir ejercicio en el día de su estudiante
- Los estudiantes llegan listos para comenzar la jornada escolar.
- Proporciona una transición saludable hacia y desde la vida hogareña.
Fechas importantes
- 3 de octubre: Concierto de la Orquesta de Otoño de AMS/AHS con la invitada especial, la Orquesta Avanzada de la Escuela Secundaria Berkeley, 7 p.m., AHS Little Theatre
