Superintendent's Community Update, September 15, 2023

Dear Albany Community,

Students get quizzed often, and although you may think you have outgrown your quiz-taking years, I have one for you here. Please answer for which local school district the following is true. The answers will be either West Contra Costa, Berkeley, Albany, Alameda, or Oakland. Good luck!


  1. This district has a low suspension rate, a high rate of Graduation, English Learner Progress, Mathematics Skills, and a very high English Language Arts Skills, according to the California Dashboard for 2022.
  2. Emery, Berkeley, and Piedmont Unified collect more than 3 times the amount of parcel tax revenue per student than this district does.
  3. This district has a lower donation/fees revenue total per student than West Contra Costa Unified.
  4. This diverse district had a student population of 28% Asian, 27% White, 17% Hispanic, 14% two or more races, and 4% African American, according to state data in 2022. 
  5. This district’s state funding level is $13,294 per student, more than $4,000 lower than the state average of $17,955.
  6. This district achieves great educational outcomes for its students, with only 71% of the revenue per student that Berkeley Unified receives, (total revenue per student of $15,681 versus $22,174).

If you haven’t guessed yet, the answer to every question is our very own Albany Unified. It is remarkable what we have been able to achieve for our students while being underfunded. You may wonder why AUSD gets less than the state average of funding. It’s because we have a lower percentage of students in great need than many other California districts. Some other districts with similar levels of state funding, such as Berkeley, have been able to overcome the funding shortfall with parcel taxes. 


I think that Albany Unified can serve our students even better than we do now. We have excellent teachers, experienced administrators, engaged parents who support education, and, most importantly, wonderful students. If we can overcome the funding challenge, we could continue to attract and retain the best educators and give them the conditions they need to teach at their best. 


The Board of Education is considering the option of a parcel tax. Please watch the video of their discussion at Tuesday’s Board meeting about hiring a firm to survey the Albany community and gauge their opinion on this matter. You can also examine the slide presentation. AUSD is facing several financial risks, such as loss of income if Golden Gate Fields is transferred to a non-taxable entity, low reserves, and a structural deficit. In order to offer competitive compensation, and to maintain or expand programs such as music, drama, languages, counseling, mental health services, academic interventions, athletics, and small class sizes, it is wise for the Board of Education to consider this now.

Si aún no lo ha adivinado, la respuesta a cada pregunta es nuestro propio Albany Unified .
