Dear Albany Community,
Last Friday I was pleased to speak at the Latinx Graduation Ceremony hosted by the student group, Connexion Latina. See the proud graduates participating in that ceremony above. After we come back from the Memorial Day holiday, which is Monday, May 29, promotion and graduation ceremonies will be happening all over the District. Please check information provided by your school and the list below to get the details on these events.
State Champion Swimmer
Sophomore AHS swimmer Sean Vorhis won the California Interscholastic Federation Para-Athlete Division state championship in the 100 meter freestyle race. This is a remarkable achievement, especially for a sophomore, who has two more years to compete! In addition to winning the 100, Sean also finished second in the state in the 50 meter freestyle. I am impressed by this amazing accomplishment by a young student-athlete, and offer congratulations both to Sean and Coach Salcedo!
More Accomplished Students
Kudos to Albany High's 2023 National Spanish Exam winners! Alfred Wu and Xavier Nguyen won gold medals and Samantha Chik, Leela Henlser, and Jessica Jung won silver medals for their terrific work. ¡Felicidades a todos!
Pia Ferus-Comelo won First Prize of $550 in the California Teachers Association César Chávez and Dolores Huerta Essay Contest. Crystal Sherpa won the first prize in the El Cerrito Trail Trekkers haiku contest while Pia won the third prize. Congratulations to these writers!
Hurrah to Sunny and Annie Eom, who were awarded the title of "Ambassador" in the 6th Annual National Community Service Awards. They are inspirations for other students to get involved in service activities and further the Global Goals of the United Nations.
Marin Avenue Closure
The City of Albany will close Marin Avenue for repaving May 20–21. See details on this notice. Marin Avenue from Cornell Avenue to Key Route Boulevard will be fully closed for street paving, including the Ohlone Greenway crosswalk at Marin Avenue, for all pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles for the duration of the weekend.

El viernes pasado tuve el placer de hablar en la Ceremonia de Graduación de Latinx organizada por el grupo de estudiantes, Conexión Latina. Campeón estatal de natación
El nadador de segundo año de AHS, Sean Vorhis, ganó el campeonato estatal de la División de Para-Atletas de la Federación Interescolar de California en la carrera de estilo libre de 100 metros. ¡Este es un logro notable, especialmente para un estudiante de segundo año, que tiene dos años más para competir!
