Halloween is next Monday, and I am looking forward to visiting the schools to see the parades and festivities. Our students wow me with their creative costumes, and the teachers impress too, with clever school-wide themes.
Ocean View Students In the News
Otters were in the San Francisco Chronicle this week as fifth grade students from all classes traveled to Ocean Beach in San Francisco to participate in a sandcastle building competition. Although this was not a school-sponsored event, since it took place on a weekend, it was an academically rich event. Students practiced their public speaking on the stage describing their “Otterworldy” castle and when speaking with reporters. They also learned about engineering, architecture, science, physical fitness, teamwork, and art! This video from teacher Rebecca Spenger details their fun day.
Ocean View Fall Festival
The Ocean View Fall Festival and Walkathon is Saturday, October 29, 11am–3pm. All are welcome at this great community event! There will be a bouncy house, food to purchase, pumpkin decorating, face painting, crafts, music, and carnival games. Reading Is The Foundation of Academic Success
I attended the screening of the film, The Right to Read, on Monday, and spoke at length with the panel after the event. How to teach young students to read is my passion and particular area of expertise. My doctoral dissertation is titled Sufficient Reading Strategies for Deficient Readers. I put these ideas to practice at Los Medanos Elementary, where every teacher at the school received the State of California’s “surprise” bonus of $25,000 for this kind of ideal practice and work.
Since I came to Albany three years ago, I have been building a foundation for change to ensure that all Albany students succeed academically. Part of this foundation, moving forward, is professional training for staff. Just as we were getting our change engines moving, the pandemic not only slowed us down, but the huge disruption it caused in our educational system has left our most vulnerable learners further behind in some areas. Despite the disruption, we have succeeded in getting a local assessment tool, called FastBridge, adopted throughout the District. This tool gives teachers frequent feedback on how each student is progressing. FastBridge combined with other assessments allows us to identify and monitor the students who need extra support. You can examine this data yourself in Director Sinclair’s presentation to the Board of Education at the October 25 meeting.
Now we are poised to implement a multi-pronged plan of action with a focus on bringing all Albany students to grade-level proficiency. More information will be presented at our next Board of Education meeting, on November 8.
Fentanyl Crisis
The fentanyl crisis has been accelerating as distribution increases and our youth are targeted. It is important to be aware of the range of forms that fentanyl takes and the extreme risks. As the name of the 1 Pill Can Kill campaign emphasizes, even a single pill can be deadly. This is a call to action to make sure our youth, families, and those of us who work with young people are aware of these extreme risks and how youth are being targeted. As a school district, we have ordered Narcan for our sites, and we are educating our site leaders and school staff. We have also sent key information to our middle and high school students.
