Dear Albany Community,
We had a great time last Saturday at the Celebración Latina in honor of Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month. The band was so good, even yours truly joined in the dancing! Thanks to Familias Latinas de Albany for organizing this event, and I hope it will become an annual event.
Teacher Professional Development—MTSS and UDL
Our excellent and highly qualified teachers are the District’s greatest resource. In surveys last year, the AUSD community put a high priority on professional development for teachers and staff. (I will communicate more in an upcoming update about other community requests and how we have responded to those.) At the October 11 Board of Education meeting, our new Director of Professional Development, Michelle Sinclair, presented a comprehensive overview of training plans. In the presentation, Director Sinclair stated that today’s teachers must:
- Be able to teach increasingly diverse learners;
- Be knowledgeable about student learning;
- Be competent in complex core academic content; and
- Be skillful at the craft of teaching.
As we proceed through the school year, you might hear the acronyms MTSS, for Multi-Tiered Systems of Support, and UDL, for Universal Design for Learning. MTSS defines a framework that aligns academic, behavioral, and social-emotional learning in a way that provides students with the support they need. UDL is a framework for optimizing teaching based on scientific insights into how humans learn and focuses on eliminating systemic barriers.
It is an ambitious goal, but I am committed to moving forward this year with both MTSS and UDL initiatives. These frameworks will allow us to organize efforts at all schools for the good of all students. Next week, I will share more about District goals for this year and our continued focus on academic success.
Film Screening—The Right to Read
You are invited to a private film screening of the new documentary about the struggle to improve literacy in Oakland and across the country. Reading at grade level standard in elementary grades is a strong indicator of future academic success. I encourage you to attend this event, which is sponsored by the Community Advisory Committee of the North Region Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA), of which Albany Unified is a member. La pasamos muy bien el sábado pasado en la Celebración Latina en honor al Mes de la Herencia Hispana/Latina. ¡La banda estuvo tan buena que incluso los suyos se unieron al baile! Gracias a Familias Latinas de Albany por organizar este evento, y espero que se convierta en un evento anual.
Desarrollo Profesional Docente—MTSS y UDL
Nuestros maestros excelentes y altamente calificados son el mayor recurso del Distrito. En las encuestas del año pasado, la comunidad de AUSD dio alta prioridad al desarrollo profesional de los maestros y el personal. (Comunicaré más en una próxima actualización sobre otras solicitudes de la comunidad y cómo hemos respondido a ellas). En la reunión de la Junta de Educación del 11 de octubre, nuestra nueva Directora de Desarrollo Profesional, Michelle Sinclair, presentó unadescripción general integral de los planes de capacitación . En la presentación, el director Sinclair afirmó que los maestros de hoy deben:
- Ser capaz de enseñar a alumnos cada vez más diversos;
- Estar bien informado sobre el aprendizaje de los estudiantes;
- Ser competente en contenido académico básico complejo; y
- Ser hábil en el oficio de enseñar.
A medida que avanzamos en el año escolar, es posible que escuche los acrónimos MTSS , para Sistemas de apoyo de niveles múltiples, y UDL , para Diseño universal para el aprendizaje. MTSS define un marco que alinea el aprendizaje académico, conductual y socioemocional de una manera que brinda a los estudiantes el apoyo que necesitan. UDL es un marco para optimizar la enseñanza basado en conocimientos científicos sobre cómo aprenden los humanos y se enfoca en eliminar las barreras sistémicas.
Es una meta ambiciosa, pero tengo el compromiso de avanzar este año con las iniciativas tanto del MTSS como de la UDL. Estos marcos nos permitirán organizar esfuerzos en todas las escuelas por el bien de todos los estudiantes. La próxima semana, compartiré más sobre las metas del Distrito para este año y nuestro enfoque continuo en el éxito académico.
Proyección de películas: el derecho a leer
Está invitado a una proyección privada del nuevo documental sobre la lucha para mejorar la alfabetización en Oakland y en todo el país. Leer al nivel estándar del grado en los grados de primaria es un fuerte indicador del éxito académico futuro.
