Smooth Start to the School Year, Safety Task Force, Budget Update & More
Dear Albany Community,
This week we had a remarkably smooth start to the school year with fewer of the glitches that districts normally experience. School staff were able to meet in person before school started, which fosters team spirit, in addition to keeping everyone well informed. When the students arrived on campus, staff noticed a huge difference from last year… Students returned understanding the rules and habits of school and were ready to learn. As a community of educators, we ended this week heartened and energized. You can be proud of your students.
Safety Outside the Home
Now is a great time to remind your students about safety outside the home. Age-appropriate communication about strangers and being aware of your surroundings is extremely important and should be reinforced now. Students should understand that being behind buildings or in hard-to-observe places is risky, especially at night. Safety Task Force
I am convening a Safety Task Force to discuss district-wide opportunities to increase student safety. The task force will meet on Sept. 14, Oct. 12, Nov. 9, Dec. 14, and Jan. 11 from 4:30pm – 5:45pm. If you are interested in being a member of this task force, please fill out this form. Task Force membership will be built with attention to equal representation of all school sites and according to when the interest form was submitted. If you cannot commit to being at all meetings, you may still attend as a spectator.
COVID-19 Reporting
AUSD will continue to maintain the COVID-19 Dashboard to transparently track active cases of COVID-19 in our schools. The Dashboard will be updated weekly. Last week, we recommended that students test before returning to school. This effective measure resulted in a number of students calling in to report positive cases of COVID while remaining home. On the Dashboard, we will only report cases of students or staff who were at school while infected, in line with our Dashboard's intent. Thanks to all the families that followed our recommendations, as we continue to work together to increase the safety of students and staff.
Budget Revision
Financial news from school districts is often depressing. This year is different. In addition to the $14.5 million that AUSD received last year in State Facilities Grants, the governor signed a budget that increases funding for schools. Albany students will have more support and the district will have more resources to recruit and retain excellent teachers. Because much of the increase is in the form of one-time funding for this year only, maintaining an adequate reserve to be able to operate during a possible future recession must be considered. All school districts in California needed to revise their budgets to incorporate the favorable changes in the final state budget. Review AUSD’s 45-Day Budget Revision here.
Even with this increase, our schools are still in great need. Please give to the extent you are able to support our PTAs, athletics, music and theater programs, and to umbrella organizations such as SchoolCARE and the Albany Education Foundation.

Esta semana tuvimos un comienzo del año escolar notablemente tranquilo con menos de los problemas técnicos que normalmente experimentan los distritos. Seguridad fuera del hogar
Ahora es un buen momento para recordarles a sus estudiantes acerca de la seguridad fuera del hogar. La comunicación apropiada para la edad sobre los extraños y estar al tanto de su entorno es extremadamente importante y debe reforzarse ahora. Los estudiantes deben comprender que estar detrás de edificios o en lugares difíciles de observar es riesgoso, especialmente de noche. Grupo de trabajo de seguridad
Estoy convocando un Grupo de trabajo de seguridad para discutir oportunidades en todo el distrito para aumentar la seguridad de los estudiantes . El grupo de trabajo se reunirá el 14 de septiembre, el 12 de octubre, el 9 de noviembre, el 14 de diciembre y el 11 de enero de 4:30 p.m. a 5:45 p.m. Si está interesado en ser miembro de este grupo de trabajo, complete este formulario . Informes de COVID-19
AUSD continuará manteniendo el Panel COVID-19 para rastrear de manera transparente los casos activos de COVID-19 en nuestras escuelas. El Tablero se actualizará semanalmente. La semana pasada, recomendamos que los estudiantes tomen la prueba antes de regresar a la escuela. Esta medida efectiva resultó en que varios estudiantes llamaran para reportar casos positivos de COVID mientras permanecían en casa. En el Tablero, solo informaremos casos de estudiantes o personal que estaban en la escuela mientras estaban infectados, de acuerdo con la intención de nuestro Tablero. Revisión del presupuesto
Las noticias financieras de los distritos escolares suelen ser deprimentes. Este año es diferente. Además de los $14,5 millones que AUSD recibió el año pasado en subvenciones estatales para instalaciones , el gobernador firmó un presupuesto que aumenta los fondos para las escuelas. Los estudiantes de Albany tendrán más apoyo y el distrito tendrá más recursos para reclutar y retener maestros excelentes. Debido a que gran parte del aumento es en forma de financiamiento único solo para este año, se debe considerar mantener una reserva adecuada para poder operar durante una posible recesión futura. Todos los distritos escolares de California necesitaban revisar sus presupuestos para incorporar los cambios favorables en el presupuesto estatal final.
