Dear Albany Community,
It was a sad and troubling week. National events have left us grieving, and local events have raised concerns about the safety of our students. Please see this Community Announcement from the Albany Police Department for context about the status of investigations.
As expected, there were some wonderful events at our schools this past week. See the photo above of an outdoor assembly at Cornell with the students wearing rainbow colors according to their grade level. June is Pride Month (here’s the Board Resolution) and you may notice rainbow flags flying proudly at our schools starting next Tuesday, June 1.
Summer Is For Reading
Summer is a great time to read. You can read aloud together with young children, and/or make sure that older children have access to the reading material they prefer. Family trips to the library or a bookstore can make a long summer day special. Any reading is good, whether it is online or on paper, a graphic novel or the newspaper, an e-zine or a famous literary novel. Our school librarians have made this easier with book exchanges, summer reading bingo and recommendations. Here are lists our librarians have prepared for elementary, middle, and high school students. Encourage your students to read this summer!
Diversify Our Narrative Student Group Thanks Teachers
In June of 2020, the Albany chapter of the Diversify Our Narrative (DON) student group formed in response to national events that highlighted the need for anti-racist teaching. These students have not only fundraised to support the purchase of additional anti-racist books and materials, they have also worked closely with teachers and principals to make this work an ongoing team effort.
DON President Zora Uyeda-Hale had these words of thanks for our teachers, “On behalf of AUSD Diversify Our Narrative, I want to extend our deepest gratitude for your incredibly hard work this year. Transitioning back to in-person school was challenging in a multitude of ways. However, AUSD DON has received so much encouragement and support from all of you. At every school site, it is so encouraging to see more diverse texts and curricula being embraced over this school year. We couldn't have done it without you.”
AUSD thanks our teachers and DON students for all their work this school year. If you would like to know more about DON or contribute to their efforts, see this page. I only wish that every school district in our country had students and teachers like Albany’s. It is a nationwide need.
Monday Is a Holiday
All schools and the district office will be closed on Monday, May 30 for Memorial Day. Please take a moment during this three-day weekend to remember those who have died in U.S. military service.

El verano es para leer
El verano es un buen momento para leer. Puede leer en voz alta junto con los niños pequeños y/o asegurarse de que los niños mayores tengan acceso al material de lectura que prefieran. Los viajes familiares a la biblioteca oa la librería pueden hacer que un largo día de verano sea especial. Cualquier lectura es buena, ya sea en línea o en papel, una novela gráfica o el periódico, una revista electrónica o una novela literaria famosa. Diversificar nuestra narrativa Grupo de estudiantes Gracias maestros
En junio de 2020, el capítulo de Albany del grupo de estudiantes Diversify Our Narrative (DON) se formó en respuesta a eventos nacionales que destacaron la necesidad de una enseñanza antirracista. Estos estudiantes no solo han recaudado fondos para apoyar la compra de libros y materiales antirracistas adicionales, sino que también han trabajado de cerca con maestros y directores para hacer de este trabajo un esfuerzo de equipo continuo.
La presidenta de DON, Zora Uyeda-Hale, tuvo estas palabras de agradecimiento para nuestros maestros: “En nombre de AUSD Diversify Our Narrative, quiero extender nuestra más profunda gratitud por su trabajo increíblemente duro este año. La transición de regreso a la escuela presencial fue un desafío de muchas maneras. Sin embargo, AUSD DON ha recibido mucho aliento y apoyo de todos ustedes. En cada sitio escolar, es muy alentador ver textos y currículos más diversos adoptados durante este año escolar. No podríamos haberlo hecho sin ti”.

el lunes es feriado

多样化我们的叙事学生群体感谢老师
2020 年 6 月，为响应强调反种族主义教学必要性的国家事件，我们成立了多元化叙事(DON) 学生团体的奥尔巴尼分会。这些学生不仅筹集资金支持购买额外的反种族主义书籍和材料，他们还与教师和校长密切合作，使这项工作成为一项持续的团队努力。
