Dear Albany Community,
Yesterday, 19 elementary school students and two teachers at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas lost their lives in another senseless shooting. Last week, shoppers were shot down at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York. At times it seems like the level of tragedy in our world is too much to bear. I offer my deepest condolences to all of those affected by this violence—those directly affected and the rest of us who have no direct connection to the victims, but are still filled with heartache and despair.
As your Superintendent, I have a responsibility to keep students safe. At the Board of Education meeting last night, as we struggled to process the tragic news, the Board passed updated safety plans for all campuses that will be posted to school websites in the near future. As a community, we all have a responsibility to help our students deal with these events.

The gun violence afflicting our schools and public places requires more than “thoughts and prayers” and resources to help heal the damage. If you wish to advocate at the national or state level for efforts to end these tragedies, I urge you to contact your members of Congress and the California Legislature, as well as President Joe Biden and Gov. Gavin Newsom.
