Dear Albany Community,
At the end of last week, there was a flurry of activity in Sacramento regarding the upcoming statewide COVID-19 vaccination requirement for school-aged children. To remind you, last October Governor Newsom announced plans that California would become the first state in the nation to require students to be vaccinated against COVID-19. The plan was to add it to the list of vaccinations required for school, such as vaccinations for measles, mumps, and rubella. This would take place after full (not emergency) FDA approval of the vaccination.
However, at this time, the FDA has only given full approval to the vaccine for those 17 years and older. Full approval may come out soon, but it remains an unknown. Many districts have lobbied that they could not successfully collect documentation on student vaccination before the beginning of the next school year. And most importantly, not all children statewide have had equal access to the vaccine. If the vaccination requirement resulted in children being unable to attend school, moving quickly to a requirement could damage the most vulnerable students. Realizing that the goal is to protect children's health and regular attendance at school, the California Department of Public Health declared last week that any vaccine requirements will not take effect until after full FDA approval and no sooner than July 1, 2023.
Albany Unified is in a much better position than many other districts. We have an extremely high vaccination rate, and have collected vaccination documentation for over 90% of students. Our student information system is updated with this data. We continue to collect vaccination data and will be ready to move forward in step with the state. If you have not submitted vaccination documentation for your student, please do so by following the instructions on our webpage.
Calendar Survey for 2023–24 School Year
The calendar for the 2023–24 school year is being planned now and we need your input before the options are presented to the Board of Education for review and approval at the May 10 meeting. Three different calendars have been proposed for you to rank by preference. Please take a few minutes to respond to the appropriate survey listed below by Wednesday April 27 at 11:59pm.
Keep in mind that the calendar shifts that we made this year, and are continuing into future years, have been in response to several issues, such as alignment with neighboring districts (which affects camps and childcare, as well as fall athletics). One major issue was the previous practice of having high school final exams in January. Students told us that the examination schedule denied them a true break in December and contributed significantly to their stress. The District took action on this by shifting our academic calendar to an earlier start date. This year was the first year that students have had their finals in December, and the change has been beneficial for our students’ mental health.
Weekend Events
The AUSD Choir Festival is this Saturday April 23 from 10:00 to 12:00 noon on the steps of Albany High School. All TK, K, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and choirs from 5th, AMS & AHS are invited to attend and perform. The program begins with a traditional round,"Toembai" and continues with each elementary grade, followed by the choirs from 5th grades, AMS & AHS. Everyone is invited!
The City of Albany and the Albany Community Foundation are sponsoring Albany Move’n’Groove, a new family event of music and exercise on Sunday, April 24. The event will take place on closed streets around the Albany High School/Memorial Park block. It features live bands and a 5K race (including a stroller division). Racing is not required, you can stroll around and listen to the bands. Support Albany High School teams and clubs, by purchasing healthy refreshments at their tables. El Festival de Coro de AUSD es este sábado 23 de abril de 10:00 a 12:00 del mediodía en los escalones de Albany High School.
