Dear Albany Community,
We have reached our Spring Break, April 4–8! There will be no classes next week and all offices will be closed. During the final eight weeks of school, there will be a lot going on as students continue to grow and learn during this final quarter. Schools are planning promotion ceremonies for fifth and eighth graders. Albany High will host senior celebrations and graduation of the class of 2022.
Testing
It was a busy week—AHS juniors were taking the CAASPP statewide assessments. The chart below shows results from 2018–19, testing was suspended during the pandemic. Third through eighth graders will take the CAASPP after spring break, and your student’s results will be available to you in the late spring or early summer. There are many ways to measure learning, and CAASPP is only one. Fall 2021 scores from our local assessment, called FastBridge, are available in Aeries. Guides for understanding FastBridge are posted here.
More Testing
I hope everyone received the free COVID-19 at-home test kit from your student’s school this week. Please test on Sunday, April 10 or first thing Monday morning, April 11, before your student returns to school. When to use the second test is your choice, based on travel, close contacts or symptoms. The general rule is that an individual should test on Day 5 after an exposure or when symptoms develop. Remember that anyone who has had COVID-19 in the previous 90 days should not test, as the test result will be affected by that past infection.
Albany Bands and Choirs Judged Superior
Seven Albany bands and orchestras were ranked “Superior” at the California Music Educators Association Bay Section Festival last week (with almost all receiving the Unanimous Superior distinction!). All Albany choirs received Superior ratings earlier in the week. This is the first time all of our groups have achieved this highest level of four possible rankings in the same year. It is a real testament to the students' hard work this year, our excellent teachers (Richard Chisholm, AMS Bands, Kate Huizinga, AMS & AHS Choirs, and Craig Bryant, AMS & AHS Orchestra, and AHS Bands) and family support of the music program through the pandemic and recovery of the past two years.

Safety Reminder
The safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority at Albany Unified School District. Although Albany Police have no new information to share regarding the investigation of the incident on Wednesday, safety is always an important topic to discuss, especially as we head into Spring Break. We ask that you find time to talk to your students, in an age-appropriate manner, about staying safe while outside the home. Here are some resources for parents and students:

Please remind students that if they are approached by a stranger to get to safety first and then immediately inform you, their teacher, or principal. Any suspicious activity should be immediately reported to the school and Albany Police at (510) 525-7300.
