Dear Albany Community,
When the final bells rang this afternoon, students joyfully entered our highly anticipated February Break. There are no classes next week, February 21–25, and all school and district staff will be taking a much-needed holiday. I hope that your family has a relaxing and pleasant break, and you take the opportunity to recharge after a difficult winter. Please plan on testing your student(s) with a rapid test on Sunday, February 27, before returning to school on Monday, February 28. This single step will do so much to prevent possible spread of the virus. Free rapid tests are available from the federal government at www.covidtests.gov.
Masking At School
Albany Unified School District has not changed any part of our masking policy, although Alameda County and the State of California have loosened restrictions for vaccinated individuals. Still, we need to prepare in advance for how our schools will handle the inevitable transition. You can view the discussion at the Board of Education meeting held on Tuesday, Feb. 15. It was mentioned that the likely first step will be easing the outdoor mask-wearing requirement for secondary students (grades 6–12) participating in PE outside, especially since this AUSD rule is local, and tougher than any state or county requirement.
Any change in the AUSD masking policy will be announced in advance, and any student or staff will be welcome to continue to mask if they choose. Any change in the district policy will be based on current case rates and could quickly revert to a more restrictive state if needed.
Black History Month Continues
Everyone who attended enjoyed the open-mic in-person Black History Month Program at the Albany Middle School Courtyard earlier this week. The AHS Black Student Union has compiled this excellent visual booklist, Celebrating Black Creativity. The final district celebration this year will be a talk, “Black Love": Past, Present, & Future, co-sponsored by the Asian Pacific Islander Parent Engagement Group (API-PEG) and the Black Parent Advisory Group (BPAG). Before the talk, you can listen to part or all of the free Masterclass on Black History, Black Freedom, and Black Love. Then, writer Camille Parker will unpack these issues during a talk on Sunday, Feb. 27 at 3:00 pm. Free registration is required for this event.

- Huge congratulations also to AHS Girls Soccer, Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball and Wrestling, who have all progressed to NCS Championships!
- AMS Unity Week (March 7–11) is a school-wide celebration of our diversity and inclusion. The activities include lunchtime art, poetry, t-shirt design, group dancing, compliment battles, "SuperFriend" essays, and cooperative games. Sounds like fun!
