Free Home COVID-19 Rapid Tests and Safety Update
Dear Albany Community,
AUSD is taking multiple measures to combat the current COVID-19 surge. As we now know, any individual, even if they are fully vaccinated, can be infected and spread the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus to others. The safety of our school community takes teamwork—please help keep our staff and students safe by following these recommendations as we reopen our schools on Monday, January 3, 2022.
Take A COVID-19 Rapid Test Before Returning to School
AUSD hopes that all students will take a rapid test for COVID-19 before returning to in-person school, whether or not they have traveled. Testing is not required, but is strongly encouraged. We are providing free test kits for students for this, through an initiative from the State of California and Alameda County Public Health Department. Home-based rapid testing is an important step to take for the continued safety of our entire community.
When to Use the Rapid Test?
Each student should take a test on Saturday, January 1 or Sunday, January 2. Take the second test four days later. Instructions are included with the test kit. Individuals with a positive test result need to notify their school’s COVID liaison by calling the main office and must isolate at home according to Alameda County Health guidelines. The student cannot return to school until cleared. As usual, any sick children or those with possible symptoms should stay home. You may also voluntarily report both negative and positive results to this website.
Pick Up A Free COVID-19 Home Test Kit For Each Student

If you are traveling, any COVID-19 rapid test will work for this purpose of screening students. The one free test kit per student will still be available to you once school is back in session. Contact your school office on how to obtain it. Families traveling on Saturday or Sunday can consider remaining at home for a few days to allow time for any symptoms to emerge, and taking a rapid test midweek before returning to school.
Additional School-Based Testing Information
AUSD encourages all students to participate in pooled testing, which is available weekly at all school sites. Even if your student is fully vaccinated, please submit the consent form linked below for pooled testing. Also linked below is a consent form for individual PCR testing, which we encourage all to submit in addition to the pooled testing consent form. All these tests are easy to take and involve a simple nasal swab of the outer portion of the nostril.

Masks
It has been shown that cloth masks are less protective than surgical or K95 masks. Students in need of a high-quality, non-cloth mask, can obtain one in their school office.
What Options Are Available If You’re Not Ready For Your Student to Return to School?
Pandemic conditions have been changing rapidly. If you aren’t comfortable sending your student back to in-person class on Monday, then you can choose to keep them at home in quarantine. These students will be offered traditional independent study for up to two weeks. Note that this short-term independent study consists of instructional materials (packets or electronic assignments) provided by the classroom teacher(s) and may take some time to prepare. Student absences on traditional independent study are excused.
Also, long-term Independent Study is available for those who want to transition out of in-person instruction. It may take a few days to enter long-term Independent Study; the entry form is here.
AUSD’s Vaccination Mandate
AUSD has a vaccination or testing mandate activating on January 3, 2022 for students 12 and over, and on January 26, 2022 for those from 5 to 11 years of age. If your student is 12 and over and you have not yet turned in vaccination documentation, please send your student to school next week with either their vaccination card or photos of their card (perhaps on a cell phone). If the student is not vaccinated, please fill out this consent form for testing.
Testing Is Available For Staff
I appreciate the concern I have heard for our staff. Be assured that rapid tests and PCR tests continue to be available weekly, and upon request, to all staff members, and we encourage all staff to test.

Mascaras

Mandato de vacunación de AUSD
