Alameda County's Safe Routes to School Program: May is Still Bike Month

Dear AUSD Community,

Alameda County’s Safe Routes to School Program has put together a list of activities and resources to help you stay healthy during the shelter-in-place mandate! All of the resources are optional and are intended to be easily incorporated into your lives.

For example, if you are able to get out for a walk, you might also want to check out one of the scavenger hunt activities where students can search for colors and shapes during your stroll. Most of our activities can be adapted to fit your needs.

We also want to let you know that May is Still Bike Month, which means you can get out and #ridethedistance.

Biking can play a role in our lives during this time.  Across the country, cities are seeing an increase in bike ridership. As long as you keep safe social distancing guidelines in mind (please make sure to check the Alameda County Public Health webpage for reliable updates), this is a great time to ride a bike. Even though the usual May Bike to School Day has been cancelled, we encourage you to join others in celebrating Bike Month

Try biking to a nearby park, a practice ride to your school, or learn bike safety and maintenance at home with one of our webinars. We want to see what folks are doing all around Alameda County! However you celebrate Bike Month, take a picture and post with the hashtag: #ridethedistance.

Check their website for all of the list of activities, including a few that can complement Bike Month. You can find all online activities on our special distance learning webpage.
